Alexander Bitar Foundation is a non-profit organization with the mission to preserve and strengthen historical heritage. There are many ways to preserve the past. One example is to write books and hence document the past. Another way is to preserve historical artifacts. The reason of why we know more of the 19th century compared to the 12th century is simply due to the fact that we, today, have much more stored information about the 19th century.
Scholars still can’t determine how the great pyramids were built. But we do know exactly how the Eiffel Tower was built, partly due to all the paper work from the architect Gustave Eiffel is still intact. Then again, it’s arguably easier and much more convenient to save documents from the 1880’s compared to 4600-year-old documents.
Today, is a completely different story. The amount of data that’s stored every day is incredibly high. Everyone with a smartphone is preserving the current state to the next generations. We’re all photographers, as they say. The internet was truly a pioneering phenomenon. Not only did we collect all information from books etc. to one place, namely the internet, we also began storing new information everyday through online newspapers and such.
However, it’s indeed possible to gain “new” information about Abraham Lincoln although he passed away in 1865, and that everything we know of him is available online. And that’s simply though historical finds. An unseen handwritten letter by Lincoln with impeccable content could give us groundbreaking information that we didn’t know of. The same goes with historical artifacts.
And that’s why we’ll never stop with our goal to bring high-end historical pieces to public forums such as museum and various institutions. There are many truly incredible historical items that are in private collections. And that’s okay, I guess. But we find it more suitable for such items to be available for the public. Although the item itself may not necessarily be physically placed in a museum, we find it morally correct that the knowledge of the item should at least be public.
At Alexander Bitar Foundation, we donate important historical items and artifacts to museums and institutions worldwide. That’s either done by ourselves, with our own founding, or with the help of other donors.
We also donate spectacular items to auctions held by charity organizations where all proceeds go to a good cause. Which, in the end, is the main purpose – namely to help others. And that’s also why it’s important to preserve history. If we all knew about the past, then the current and the future would be a much better place.
